Home Decor Hack for Moms – Fall Edition

So it’s officially fall. All the stores have their ceramic pumpkins and adorable floral arrangements on display. You’re strolling through the aisles of Target imagining  your home decked out for fall, but then you remember…you live with little destroyers that break ev-er-y-thing. Am I right? If you are one of the fortunate moms, that has been blessed with angel children that listen all the time, keep their hands to themselves and are never clumsy, this hack is not for you.  But if you’re like me and you want ALL the things, but there’s no way in Hades a ceramic pumpkin could last more than a few hours in your house, then this is for you.

Granted my kids are very young (3 ages 4 and under), but with my 2 boys personalities I think we may need to use this hack for the long haul. Last fall I went on a search for ways to update our home decor for the season, without breaking the budget or buying breakables. We live in a 2 bedroom apartment and keep things pretty minimal, so there aren’t a lot of surfaces to decorate. And quite frankly, nothing is out of reach anymore because my kids are literal giants that also like to climb (my 10 month old has started pulling bowls off of the kitchen table). I am constantly catching my 4 year old discovering new ways to scale a wall or shelf or closet, so there is no real safe space for breakables.

Even though we live in an apartment, we have a very spacious living room which we furnished with a super comfy sectional (from Big Lots!).  So I decided to start there, especially since we live so much of our life in the main living space. I needed to find things that were durable or easily replaced. We have a pretty neutral color palette, so I decided to go with blues and greens for fall.

The biggest hack I discovered after scouring the internet (aka Pinterest, Amazon, and Target) was pillows. Pillows are the easiest and most cost effective way to update your living space seasonally and without the worry of something breaking (besides a zipper maybe?).  Now I know new pillows can actually get very expensive, so I decided to order pillow fillers on amazon and pillow cases for the season. I got these super cute blue pumpkin pillow cases and found a matching throw blanket at Ross. I found a similar throw at Target if you’re ready to take the plunge.

I was also able to find Christmas pillow cases for the season on Amazon as well! Honestly, there is a rabbit hole of pillow case options on Amazon and if you’re not careful you can get super lost in it. That being said, once you buy the pillow fillers, it is so easy to update your living space any time you like for the price of one new store bought pillow. You can even add some store bought pillows into the mix for added variety and texture.

Thankfully there are also a lot of fun, kid-friendly decor trends happening right now. One of them being plush pumpkins (or Santa’s for Christmas). I picked up a few pumpkins at Target and threw them up on my entertainment center and the shelf behind my couch. They are super cute and another item that won’t break easily.  So I don’t have to worry when my boys decide to play dodge the pumpkin or attempt to juggle with them.

Plush decor is also awesome because it’s not something that will cause injury when thrown at my face or the baby. Am I the only mom with literal SCARS from toys being thrown? Just me?  Ok. Well, plush decor and pillows are here to stay in the Somner household. That is at least until my kids are older and can be trusted to not inflict injury upon one another or myself. (wait, does that actually happen?) I don’t know if there is a magical age for kids to be less rowdy or more graceful, but I’ll take a pillow fight with them any day over the fanciest home decor.

So whether you’re planning an epic pillow fight with the fam, or just want safe, worry free home decor look no further because throw pillows are the answer to your mom life decorating woes.  And I mean can you ever really have too many pillows and blankets? That may be the 9 in me (any other enneagram fans?), but I think not. Bring on all the comfy cozy days of fall cuddles & warm bevvies.  Comment below with your favorite fall beverage & let me know if you find some epic pillows for your safe fall decor this year.

XOXO, B
